Two 19-year friends, John Canning and Jay Schuster, embark on a project together when a local pediatric practice asks for help creating practice management software.
John and Jay incorporate People’s Computer Company, purchase equipment, and develop early scheduling/records software for the pediatric client from John’s basement.
The company expands offerings as more practices show interest. They refocus wholly on pediatrics, rebranding as Physician’s Computer Company. John and Jay bootstrapped along with help from acquaintances.
After two major downsizes, investors threaten dissolution. But John and Jay buy back control and restructure to re-win pediatric customers. PCC doubles down on dedication to pediatric practices – deciding to remain private to keep customer needs the priority rather than pursuing an IPO exit.

PCC has grown steadily in our home state for over 40 years. We moved from Essex to our current Champlain Mill headquarters in Winooski in 1998. Our team has also expanded significantly, from our founding duo to over 100 employees today.
From our Vermont headquarters, we now provide pediatric software, services, and consulting to thousands of pediatric clinicians across the United States and territories.
To this day, our core principles stay the same. We still build easy-to-use software. We remain fiercely independent, like the clients we serve. And we stay dedicated to helping pediatrics thrive.
